A Big Vision From A Modest Start

The Alexandrite Group comes from modest roots. Diane Nissen Friedman, the founder of The Alexandrite Group, explains that the business grew from a need for budget advisor services that she noticed in coworkers and friends:

While working as a project manager in the cellular phone industry, I was often approached by friends and colleagues for financial advice.  The advice ranged from 401(k) planning, to ideas on how to pay for a new car, and general monetary affairs.  It’s interesting that they did not go to our human resource department, but rather sought my advice. I did have a reputation of being thoughtful in my spending habits.  So the business really grew from realizing that there was a need for this kind of service in my community.

While I was considering the business, I spoke to a large cross section of adults, especially parents of young and adult children.  According to a Charles Scwab survey, over half of these adults confessed that they know little to almost nothing about how to manage money, and that they could not teach proper money management skills to their children.

I started The Alexandrite Group in 2008 with the mission of helping people with their everyday money problems. Since then, I have helped countless families, small business owners and individuals realize their financial goals.

What Motivates The Alexandrite Group

When I meet people from various backgrounds (education, social class, and perceived intelligence) they often do not have a good understanding where their hard earned money is spent.  Dreams of ever retiring are far out of reach.  In some cases, all current income is spent on today’s latest toys – cars, home, furniture, vacations, cellular phones or is just disappearing to pay for current living expenses.  Money spent today means it will not be available in the future.  

It is not about being frugal and never spending money on your morning coffee.  It is about whether an individual consciously wants to spend several hundred dollars a year on that morning coffee or would prefer to use that money for a plane ticket.  It is not only deciding whether to spend the money on the coffee but how to save the money so it is available for that plane ticket.
